Information technology

Information technology, often shortened to IT, is the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data. The term is often used as a synonym for computers and computer networks, but it also encompasses other information distribution technologies such as television and telephones.  

Computer hardware is typically operated by a person using a keyboard and mouse. This includes servers, storage devices, networks, routers, switches, personal computers (PCs), laptops, tablets, and smartphones. The software applications involved include operating systems (OS), middleware programs such as database management systems (DBMS), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications as well as more specific tools that support an organization’s specific business processes.

Data can be in the form of text documents, images, or videos amongst others. It can be either unstructured or structured – meaning it can be organized into neat rows and columns in a spreadsheet or database table or it can be more free-flowing like natural language text.

The transmission part of IT covers both wired technologies such as Ethernet cables as well as wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi. Data is transmitted over these networks using various protocols such as the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

Assistive technology
